Enigma code

During todays lesson we looked at Roland Barthes Enigma codes. We looked at Barthes 5 theories which where The Hermeneutic code- the voice of truth ( this is an element in a story that is not explained and , therefore excises as an enigma for the reader raising questions.
The Proairetic code- the voice of empiries
The semantic code- the voice of the person
The Symbolic code- the voice of the symbol
The Cultural code- the voice of Knowledge

The Enigma theory suggest a text which could be a film or poster where it portrays a mystery to draw the audience in and it poses a question so the audience get actively involved with the film. An example of this is a mystery film where the audience get involved to figure out the mystery them selves and to see if they are right.

Title sequence analysis Blade 2

STINCS Blade 2

Setting
Theme
Iconography
Narrative
Character
Style

The setting

At the beginning of Blade 2 you see a character walking though a dark place. There is a shallow depth of field in this first shot it focuses just on the chains which could show that there is a strange darkness to this place and that the character could be evil also that there could be a presences of danger. Low key lighting has also been used suggesting that the character must like the dark. The camera is tracking the character through chains and a fence. The way the place looks empty could connate that it is set in a wear house or somewhere abandoned where no one would go.

Theme

By looking at this sequence we can tell that the themes for this film would be Action, Thriller, sci-fi, Revenge, Justice and Hunting. The way we could tell this is by the the picture of an man and all information about him which could show that this film could be about revenge or the man is a target and is being hunted by the mysterious character.

Iconography

At the beginning of Blade 2 there is different Iconography that as been used for example blades/ swords    , bullets, gun, chains, abandoned place, equipment and Vampire teeth. We see a lot of close ups of the weapons. This all connate that this film will be action and sic-fi.

Narrative

The narrative for blade 2 is pretty much straight forward because it starts to tell us/ the audience about Blade and that how vampires are real. Blade is half human half vampire. It tells us how Blade came about and that he couldn't cope with his first for blood and that one man came alone and helped him. The last bit of information we are told about is that blades friend gets kidnapped and turn't into a vampire which blade hates and is out to try and find him. So the opening titles for Blade is basicly part of the story and a crusail part.

Character

We are only introduced to 2 characters in the title. These are Blade the half human half vampire and his friend the old man who has been kidnapped. We only see the younger blade and his old friend but we don't see what blade looks like now because the camera angles never show his face.

Style

The style for Blade 2 is that they use a lot of dark images so you can't see whats really going on. The place lighting suggested that the place is in the middle of no where and that no one would go there so it could be a great hiding place. the way that machinery has been used could represent that the place Blade is in could of been a factory of some kind. There is only some bright lighting used towards the end of the sequence when blade is suiting up. It shows the night time coming through the windows.
